Artists Statement: I am
drawn to the graphic nature of black and white, thus my pieces always
begin with designs in black India ink, applied with a pen, on a ground
of pure white paper. These designs are often inspired by the shapes and
lines of nature, but can also include depictions of our man-made
environment as well. Beyond the particular subject matter, I always
attempt to seek out and imply an underlying repetitive pattern,
providing the viewer with visual comfort and an opportunity to unfocus
the mind.
I next add saturated hues in unusual, often surprising, color
combinations: lime green apples ringed with magenta against a scarlet
ground, flaming yellow-orange petals unfolding against a dusty pink sky,
or luscious deep violet plums and emerald green leaves against palest
blue. My use of color is perhaps the most recognizable element of my
pieces and has been influenced by the artistic traditions, predominantly
the indigenous textile arts (but also the pottery, tilework, carving,
painting and other traditions) that I have seen and experienced during
my international travels and studies.
I currently live and work in Nelson, British Columbia. I have completed
several commissions and my work is represented in private collections in
Canada, the United States and Europe. I continue to exhibit new work
throughout BC and was an invited contributor to the Kunamokst Mural
Mosaic, a collaborative project unveiled at West Vancouver Spirit
Square, an Official 2010 Winter Olympic Games Celebration Site.
