4 Airport Hotels Near Rodadero Aquarium: Solo Safety
I'm excited to share one of my favourite coastal stops: El Rodadero, where a day at the sea aquarium can turn into a boat outing to Playa Blanca. The airport-side resort strip is convenient, but it is not the same base as Santa Marta's historic centre, so plan your transfer and your day trip before landing.

Arriving well: airport to El Rodadero

Simón Bolívar International Airport sits on Santa Marta's southern coast, with El Rodadero and the resort strip along the way into town. I spent years on airport ground crews, and one question travellers always asked on the apron was, 'Which way do I go now?' My answer here is simple: follow arrivals to the official taxi service and ask for the current fare to your exact hotel area. The 2026 official tariff lists 23,600 COP to Pozos Colorados and 30,400 COP to Bello Horizonte; confirm the current run before setting off.

  • Ask: '¿Cuál es la tarifa oficial hasta Bello Horizonte?' or name your hotel's district.
  • A blue bus also picks up outside arrivals and runs toward the centre.

The aquarium day: sea life, boats and Playa Blanca

Rodadero Sea Aquarium and Museum makes a straightforward outing from El Rodadero: the aquarium is reached by boat, and a visit is typically about 45 minutes. Its collection includes more than 100 marine species, so I'd give it its own focused stop rather than treat it as a quick photo detour. If you have more time, pair it with Playa Blanca, the neighbouring cove reached by boat from El Rodadero. That combination turns a museum visit into a half- or full-day coastal plan; bring cash for local transport and follow the boat operator's safety instructions.

For a practical base right in the departure neighbourhood, Tamaca Beach Resort is about 2 km by boat from the aquarium area. It has direct beach access, a large pool with bar service, a restaurant, and airport shuttle.

An airport-side stay for an easy coastal start

If your priority is landing, checking in and keeping the first day simple, the southern resort coast is a useful base. Aluna Beach is listed a few steps from Simón Bolívar International Airport and 12 km from the aquarium, so allow for a separate transfer to El Rodadero. It offers beachfront access, a private beach area, a pool, a restaurant and an airport shuttle. (The convenience is real; the aquarium is not on the hotel doorstep.)

About 12 km from Rodadero Sea Aquarium and Museum, Aluna Beach is close to Simón Bolívar International Airport and suits a stay built around an easy arrival before heading to the aquarium. The property has direct beachfront access, a private beach area, a swimming pool, restaurant, bar, fitness centre, free Wi-Fi and airport shuttle. (The aquarium visit needs its own trip into El Rodadero.) Beachfront aparthotel

Beach time, with the airport close by

Hotel Santorini Resort is in Bello Horizonte, about 12 km from the aquarium using the nearby Aluna-area distance as a guide. It is 70 m from Bello Horizonte beach and a 5-minute drive from the airport, which makes it better for a beach-first stay than for walking to El Rodadero's boats. The resort lists three outdoor pools, a spa, gym, skybar, restaurant and airport shuttle. For my own planning, I'd choose this kind of base when the flight schedule matters as much as the outing.

Its three outdoor pools, restaurant, skybar, gym, spa and airport shuttle make it a beach-focused stop; plan a separate transfer to El Rodadero for the aquarium boats. A resort stay with room for family time

Zuana Beach Resort suits travellers who want the stay itself to be part of the coastal break, with seven swimming pools, four restaurants, a fitness centre, family rooms and airport shuttle. It is a beachfront property in Santa Marta's coastal resort area; allow roughly 12 km to the aquarium based on the nearby airport-side coast, then make the El Rodadero boat outing a planned excursion. I like having a clear split between resort time and the activity day-it keeps a short stop from becoming a scramble.

Late July: the bay becomes part of the programme

If your dates are flexible, Santa Marta's Fiesta del Mar usually takes place in the last week of July around the city's anniversary on 29 July. The programme brings concerts, nautical competitions, parades, sport and food to the bay and city stages; the 2026 edition ran 23-29 July, while future dates should be checked when announced. It's a lively contrast to a quieter aquarium-and-beach day, and I'd expect busy transport and book accommodation early. For more options across the city, browse Santa Marta hotels and apartments.

Solo safety: boats, taxis and the beach

Safety note: Choose licensed boats and insist on life jackets for the aquarium or Playa Blanca crossing. In Santa Marta, use a licensed app or phone taxi, or ask your hotel or restaurant to call one; don't hail a car on the street. Watch your drink in bars and restaurants, and take a taxi rather than walking far late at night. Swim only where permitted and follow local instructions. I'm enthusiastic about this easy sea-and-museum combination, but the sensible version starts with a checked transfer and a properly authorised boat.

Make the first day easy

For a compact plan, check in, ask your hotel to arrange or explain the current ride to El Rodadero, then choose the aquarium alone or combine it with Playa Blanca by boat. Keep the Fiesta del Mar in mind for late July, when the bay's event programme adds another reason to stay nearby. I'd happily make the aquarium-and-beach outing my favourite first-day choice: it is focused, coastal and easy to shape around an arrival. Enjoy Santa Marta, and keep the practical basics close-confirmed transport, licensed boats and a life jacket.
