Plan slow, culture-led days near La Marina Park in Cartagena: airport taxi-rank advice, walkable sights, seasonal events, hotel bases and practical solo-safety tips.
Updated Oct 31, 2026
I'm excited to share one of my favourite ways to experience Cartagena: slow walks through its historic heart, with La Marina Park as a useful starting point. These are central stays, not hotels beside the airport, so expect a short ride from Rafael Núñez International Airport. My years working airport ground crew taught me that a clear first transfer can make the whole arrival feel easier; I still plan that step before anything else.
Arrive smoothly, then let the city set the pace
Rafael Núñez International Airport is in Crespo, about 3 km from the historic centre. Use the authorised taxi rank at the domestic or international exit and ask, ¿Me muestra la tarifa oficial hasta el Centro Histórico? The drive to the historic centre is about 10 minutes in typical conditions, but traffic can change the run, so confirm the current journey before setting off. At the rank, check the posted fare table rather than agreeing to an unlisted price. These bases put you near La Marina Park and the old city's sights, not at the terminal. I prefer beginning with a short walk and a pause, rather than packing the arrival day.

About a 5-minute walk from La Marina Park, this walled-city base puts San Pedro Claver Square just 50 metres away and suits a gentle first visit to the historic centre. The hotel has an outdoor pool, restaurant, terrace, bar and free Wi-Fi; its restaurant serves homemade Caribbean specialities. Rooms include air conditioning, work desks and flat-screen cable TVs. It is 8 km from Rafael Núñez International Airport. (A central address means you arrive in the city rather than beside the runway.) hotel ->

About an 8-minute walk from La Marina Park, this stay is a practical base for the historic quarter and the nearby Muelle de La Bodeguita, the authorised dock for tourist boat departures. The convention centre is opposite, and the historic quarter is a 3-minute walk away. Facilities include an outdoor pool, restaurant, bar, terrace, spa and wellness centre, room service and airport shuttle. Airport transfers are useful when you want to keep arrival logistics simple. Take the walls slowly, one stretch at a time
The walled city is the best place to trade a checklist for an unhurried route. Its ramparts are open access, and a loop can take 1-2 hours; the paving is uneven and some ramps are steep, so I would choose a shorter section if the heat or walking surface is wearing you down. The Baluarte de Santo Domingo is a natural place to pause before continuing towards Las Bóvedas, where old defensive vaults now house craft shops. A guided walking tour starting near the Torre del Reloj or Plaza de San Pedro Claver adds the layers of fortification, trade and daily life that are easy to miss when rushing past.
Make room for the plazas and their complicated histories
Near the Plaza de Bolívar, the Museo del Oro Zenú is a small, free visit that introduces the region's pre-Hispanic goldwork, pottery and shell objects. The adjoining Palacio de la Inquisición houses the Museo Histórico de Cartagena, with exhibitions on the city's history, the Inquisition, human rights and coexistence. I'd take these visits at a measured pace: the displays make the city's heritage more than a backdrop, including its painful histories. The cathedral and the church and museum of San Pedro Claver are close enough to make a thoughtful walking circuit rather than a rushed museum dash.

About a 12-minute walk from La Marina Park, this restored colonial mansion is a useful base for a slow circuit through the old city's squares and museums. It has a terrace swimming pool, spa and wellness treatments, two restaurants and a bar; some rooms have balconies overlooking an inner vertical garden. Airport shuttles can be arranged, and the airport is about a 10-minute drive away. (A pool break is a welcome counterpoint to a day of walking.) Booking details ↗
Choose a fortress visit or a gentler city circuit
Castillo de San Felipe de Barajas rewards a dedicated visit: its linked batteries and tunnels explain how Cartagena defended its landward approach. Allow 1.5-2 hours, go early to avoid the strongest heat, and bring water and sturdy shoes; the ramps are steep, and low tunnels and upper levels are not accessible to everyone. For a lower-effort overview of the old town, electric carriages now run short routes of about 30 minutes and longer circuits of about 1 hour from authorised stops. I like having both options in mind: one for deeper history, one for conserving energy.

About a 12-minute walk from La Marina Park, this historic-centre stay works well for pairing the cathedral area with a measured trip to San Felipe. The cathedral is less than 200 metres away. The hotel has an outdoor pool, terrace, spa and wellness centre, airport shuttle and free Wi-Fi; rooms include a small seating area and private bathroom. Rafael Núñez International Airport is about a 15-minute drive away. (The pool gives you an easy way to build a rest break into a sightseeing day.) Tripadvisor details ↗
Let Getsemaní add living culture to the itinerary
Across Avenida Venezuela, Getsemaní brings a different pace: murals, the Plaza de la Trinidad and a history shaped by artisans and residents who pressed for independence. A community-based street-art and culture walk is a good way to hear context rather than treating local life as scenery. For an easy evening, browse the street-food stalls around the plaza or take a guided food walk through Getsemaní and the walled city. I'd keep to busy main streets after dark, carry valuables discreetly and take a booked taxi if walking between districts late.

About a 15-minute walk from La Marina Park, this Getsemaní base is well placed for exploring the neighbourhood's plazas and street art, with the walled city also within walking distance. Its rooftop outdoor pool, restaurant, bar and spa facilities make it easy to build in downtime. The hotel can assist with airport transfers, city tours and island excursions; Rafael Núñez International Airport is 4 km away. (Getsemaní's lively evenings are part of its character, so this suits travellers who want to be close to street life.) Google Travel details ↗
Time your visit for culture, not just the calendar
Cartagena's cultural season gives a slow itinerary extra purpose. The Cartagena Festival de Música brings concerts to the Teatro Adolfo Mejía, churches, cloisters and plazas in January; the Hay Festival follows later that month with talks and interviews at venues around the walled city. In early April, FICCI combines screenings, industry events and free outdoor cinema in plazas and neighbourhoods. The Candelaria festivities connect the city's food traditions with devotion at the convent on Cerro de la Popa. These are busy periods, so I'd reserve accommodation and any ticketed events early, then leave breathing room between plans.
A practical, safety-conscious way to get around
Safety and getting around:
For airport arrivals, use the authorised taxi rank at your terminal exit and check the official fare table; confirm the current journey time before departure.
Within Cartagena, taxis do not use meters. Book through your accommodation or an app, and agree the fare before riding.
Keep your phone and valuables out of sight on the street, stay on busy routes at night and never leave a drink unattended.
For island trips, use the Muelle de La Bodeguita and licensed operators; follow the port captain's navigation flags.
For emergencies, call 123.
Prices and availability can change, so confirm when booking.
My favourite way to leave room for the place
My favourite plan is simple: take one section of the walls, choose a museum or church that gives it context, then leave the rest of the day open. I learned during my airport ground-crew years that a trip often goes better when the first plan is clear and the next one can flex. In Cartagena, that means using the official taxi rank, walking at a pace that suits the heat and taking local histories seriously. If you want to compare more stays around the city, see Cartagena accommodation options. You can enjoy a lot near La Marina Park without trying to see it all at once.
