Hotels Near India Catalina, Cartagena: 5 Solo-Safe Picks

I'm excited to share one of my favourite arrivals in Colombia: Cartagena, where the plane lands almost inside the city! After years as a ground-crew supervisor, I watched plenty of travellers lose an hour between gate and taxi, so this guide starts at the airport exit and works outward. One honest orienting note: India Catalina is the indigenous guide and interpreter who led Pedro de Heredia around the bay in 1533, so I use her as a compass for the historic centre, not as a street address. I measure every base by its distance to the airport and the old quarter, through a value lens: where the free sights are, where taxis eat your budget, and where the noise costs you sleep (it happens!).

Getting There: The Airport Exit, the Taxi Rank and the Real Cost

Rafael Núñez (CTG) sits in Crespo, about 3 km from the walled city, the shortest airport-to-sightseeing run I know in Colombia (and I have timed a few!). Expect roughly 10 minutes to the historic centre and 15 to Bocagrande, but confirm the current run, because terminal works are changing the kerbside.

  • Exit: go to the authorised taxi rank at the domestic or international exit and ask for the official 2026 fare table before you sit down. There are no meters in Cartagena.
  • Apps: pick-up points near the terminal can be restricted, so check where your driver can meet you.
  • Airport tax: international USD 54, domestic COP 24,700, normally already in your ticket.
  • Buses: Transcaribe has no direct airport line.

Why I Use India Catalina as My Compass

India Catalina guided and interpreted for Pedro de Heredia when he entered the bay on 14 January 1533. He founded Cartagena that June on the site of the village of Calamarí. Her name now marks the India Catalina awards of FICCI, the oldest film festival in Latin America, running since 1960. (Her story belongs to a painful conquest, so I read it with respect rather than as decoration.)

As a ledger, it works well: the old centre she is tied to is where the best free value sits. The ramparts, the plazas and a gold museum cost nothing to enter, so a base within a short walk or ride saves real money.

Crespo: Sleeping Beside the Runway

The question travellers always asked me on the apron: "Is it worth sleeping next to the airport?" My answer: yes for a dawn flight or a late landing, no if you want atmosphere. Crespo has mid-range hotels, a long seafront avenue and the Túnel de Crespo, which speeds traffic towards the centre. You trade old-town charm for a cheap, short hop in either direction. Before committing, I'd still compare hotels in Cartagena across zones.

Stay here for early flights; you trade old-town atmosphere for a 1 km hop to the terminal (confirm your ride, as the access road has works). It is a 13-minute walk to Crespo Beach. Family rooms have air-conditioning, balconies, a work desk, minibar and free WiFi, and there is free parking, a year-round outdoor pool, a fitness centre, a restaurant, a bar and a coffee shop. The buffet breakfast serves local specialities, juice, cheese and fruit. (Safety: it is a local district, so have the front desk call your taxi after dark.) hotels in Crespo

The Walled City: Where Your Money Goes Furthest on Foot

The ramparts are free and open. A loop takes a couple of hours, so go early or from about 5 pm, because there is little shade before 4 pm. The Museo del Oro Zenú on the Plaza de Bolívar is also free (closed Mondays). The Palacio de la Inquisición and the San Pedro Claver sanctuary are ticketed. The Torre del Reloj is under maintenance until 31 December 2026, so expect scaffolding in your photos. (Staying inside the walls costs more, brings touts around the plazas and some night noise. Walk on busy streets after dark.)

Stay here for the plazas; you trade beach views for walkability. The historic cathedral is under 200 metres away, restaurants are within a 5-minute walk, and the airport is a 15-minute drive (confirm the current run). Rooms have modern décor, stone floors, a flat-screen cable TV and a small seating area. There is a pool, a spa, a terrace, room service, a 24-hour front desk and an airport shuttle. Centro Uno Shopping Centre is 10 minutes by car, and the breakfast is rated exceptional. Booking.com page ↗

The Convention-Centre Edge and the Island Boats

The Muelle de La Bodeguita sits at the foot of the walls between the Torre del Reloj and the convention centre. It is the only authorised dock for the Rosario Islands, Barú and Tierra Bomba, and the Rosario run takes about an hour each way by speedboat. Pay the dock-use fee at the ticket windows (valid seven days) plus the park entry, and obey the daily flag: red means no departures.

  • Book only operators departing from La Bodeguita; avoid street touts.
  • Agree in writing what is included: lunch, snorkel gear, return time.

Getsemaní: Murals, Street Food and Weekend Noise

Just outside the walls across the Avenida Venezuela, Getsemaní is where independence was pushed in 1811, and where value-hunters eat. Plaza de la Trinidad fills every evening, and Calle de la Media Luna was rebuilt in 2026. The Cabildo de Getsemaní parade is on 14 November 2026. (Weekend noise is real, so pack earplugs.)

Stay here for street life and nightlife; you trade quiet weekends for a short walk to the Convention Center, the Walled City, Plaza de Bolívar and the Palace of the Inquisition. The airport is 4 km away, and the concierge arranges transfers and tours (agree any fare first). There is a rooftop pool, a bar, a restaurant, a spa and family rooms. The minibar includes complimentary welcome beverages on the first night. (Safety: take a booked taxi, not a stroll, back from late-night bars.) boutique hotel ->

El Laguito and Bocagrande: Beach Base, With Vendor Rules

The peninsula south of the old town has high-rise hotels, shopping streets and the city's most central beach. The sand is greyish and split by breakwaters, and the water is calm but not crystal clear. The beaches are free, but vendors are numerous and insistent. Ask the price before accepting chairs, tents, massages or food, check the bill against the menu, and stay out of the water when red flags fly. (Yes, I have said "no, gracias" thirty times in one afternoon.) The old town is a short taxi ride away; agree the fare first.

Staying Safe: My Solo-Traveller Checklist

Most visitors have trouble-free stays in the tourist areas, but I never skip these basics:

  • Taxis: book through an app, your hotel or a restaurant. Don't hail one on the street at night, and agree the fare first.
  • Drinks: never leave them unattended or accept drinks, food or flyers from strangers (scopolamine is used to incapacitate victims).
  • Phones: keep them out of sight at café tables and on the street.
  • ATMs: use machines inside banks or malls in business hours.
  • Alcohol: drinking in public spaces is illegal.
  • Emergency: 123.

When to Go: Events, Booking Windows and Value

Your calendar sets your bill. Mid-December to mid-January and Semana Santa (21-28 March 2027) are the dearest weeks. Festival dates for 2027 are the Music Festival (9-17 January), the Hay Festival (28-31 January) and FICCI, with the India Catalina awards (6-11 April). Independence festivities run 6-16 November 2026. For better value, aim for late January to mid-March outside festivals, late April to May, or late August to September (October is the wettest month). Compare all accommodations in Cartagena early. You've got this: arrive well, ask the rank for the fare table, and keep to busy streets at night. Prices and availability can change, so confirm when booking.
